Walking the Bays

Browns Bay Beach
Often on a Sunday morning we walk locally, but we usually start at Tobay shops and walk into Brown’s Bay, this week we did the reverse. We met and parked on Valley Road in Browns Bay which is a small seaside town, the sea front is lined with cafes and recently a boardwalk (Manly Esplanade) was added along the front, not ideal for Nordic Walking but it’s a nice addition to the waterfront.  It has a small selection of shops in the centre and the East Coast Bays Community Centre is very active within the local community and is the hub for all local events.   Browns Bay once had its own wharf and steamships and other crafts would transport people to and from the Bay, sadly the wharf was damaged in a storm and it just wasn’t feasible to reinstate it, although many people would love to see a wharf rebuilt in the area.

Entrance to Long Bay Reserve

At the far end of the beach there is access to a cliff top path, Lotus walk, this pathway brings you out at Sharon Road; you can follow the path to Winston Cove, Waiake or carry on along the footpath and along the road to Long Bay via either Beach Road, Rewi Street and Cliff Road or Toroa Street, and take Oneroa path down to Long Bay Park or onto the beach.

The weather was great so we ambled along the beach as the tide was out and walked back across the reserve, we all congregated at the entrance and some chose to walk the Track back up to Cliff Road and others via Beach Road and back to Browns Bay.
Obviously the cliff tracks are very steep in places and there are a variety of different routes to choose from, the great thing is, no matter how fit you are there are always alternatives.
Another option is a walk down to the bottom of Rock Isle Road and into Winston Cove, there’s a narrow track back up to Sharon Road and back onto Waiake Beach.  I walked there this morning and the boaties were out in force.

Getting our feet wet at Long Bay Beach

The cafes were very busy on Sunday and we had a tight squeeze fitting around one of the tables for coffee, I can recommend Ben Gusto, it’s a small but friendly cafe and it’s a great treat after a Nordic Walk to sip English breakfast tea and feast on date scones, jam and cream!
